TED-evenings at yoga-link

One of the major changes with our Information Age, is that information and existing ideas are spreading much more quickly. As is pointed out by e.g. Fredrik Hären, this is one of the reasons why almost every area nowadays - from engineering, to politics, to social trends, and music - is undergoing more or less revolutionary evolutions. What is a reality today was often inconceivable just a few years ago. However, to find high-quality knowledge is still a challenge. Furthermore, despite these rapid developments, we are still far from mature enough as a society to meet the many serious challenges we are facing in the rather near future: concerning everything from global warming and our transition from oil-dependence, potential massive shortage of drinking water, exploding immigration needs, etc, etc. Finally, many of the needed changes concerns transformation on the personal level, or concerning behavioural patterns among smaller groups of people, concerning things that cannot be fully conveyed over the internet.

These challenges are at the heart of what yoga-link is about, and one of our ways for bridging (i.e. linking) the local and personal developments of classical yoga with these new global needs and possibilities is through the arrangement of these TED-evenings.

TED - ideas worth spreading

TED is a constantly growing collection of online lectures given all over the world. It features an incredible variety of wonderful speakers that are both knowledgeable, inspiring, and onto some really thought-provoking ideas. The topics can range from e.g. new technological breakthroughs, to new ideas on educational reform, or a new understanding of how societies evolve. The lectures are usually quite short, approx 10-20 min, and are always easy to understand.

Combining TED talks with social gatherings

The idea here is hence to combine listening to some of these TED talks with a social gathering, and thus being able to both have a nice social time, and discuss the watched videos, in a natural and relaxed environment, and with other people that are interested in the same topics.

At our disposal for these gatherings we have three rooms:

At the moment, the maximal number of participants per TED-evening is limited to 18 people

A typical evening will be ordered approximately as follows:

First event, April 14, 2011

This will be the inaugoral event. To make sure that enough people will arrive, I have already invited my research group. But there will be space for some few people on top of that, and more if some people from my research group are unable to come. Send an email to gunnar.cedersund@liu.se if you are interested in attending. We have only started the discussions regarding which videos to watch, but some of the first mentioned proposals (not by me) are the following:
